Our work with professor of primal politics Louis Herman, who studies hunter gatherers, has led us to believe that early humans probably had a strong sense of well being that stemmed from living within their “original human design”. Professor Herman calls this “primal joy”, and Buddhist scholars call it “ordinary” or “original mind”. For us the rock art from southern Africa suggests a similar story. In our extensive field work we have encountered this primal joy amongst older San men and women who have lived at least half of their lives as foragers.
This world we have inherited is out of balance. We have been taught to view nature as other; something to be conquered. We are therefore at war with ourselves, and the modern super predators depression and anxiety hunt us all. Our bodies literally fight themselves through immune disorders that are pandemic. Like the mythical Ouroboros serpent we are eating our own tails. We are killing our planet, and this process of destruction is now considered the “6th extinction”.
The Earth has been stripped of up to 90% of its species five times before in the past 450 million years. Now it’s happening again—and this time there’s no rogue asteroid responsible… the numbers are sobering: Over all, there has been a human-driven decline in the populations of all species by 25% over the past 500 years, but not all groups have suffered equally. Up to a third of all species of vertebrates are now considered threatened, as are 45% of most species of invertebrates.
